Irish passports are issued to Irish citizens by the Consular and Passport Division of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin, Ireland.

An Irish passport enables the bearer to travel internationally and serves as an indication of Irish citizenship, as well as facilitating and securing consular assistance while abroad. Irish citizens have visa-free or visa on arrival access to 172 countries and territories; the international access available to Irish citizens ranks 6th in the world according to the Visa Restrictions Index.

Every Irish citizen is also a citizen of the European Union by right. Both the conventional Irish passport booklet and the newly introduced Irish passport card allow for freedom of movement and residence in any of the states of the European Economic Area(EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland.
